Windowsspiele unter Linux zocken mit Proton

Zocken unter Linux? Geht das überhaupt? Da gibt es doch maximal vier Spiele. Quatsch. Spätestens als Proton 2018 auf Steam erschien, ist das sogar fast mit jedem Windowsspiel möglich. Warum ich das hier jetzt Anfang 2021 schreibe? Ich habe festgestellt, dass teilweise sogar alteingesessene Linuxuser nicht wissen wie einfach es ist, mit Proton Spiele zu installieren.

Das von Valve entwickelte open Source Tool nutzt die Vulkan-Schnittstelle um das für Windowsspiele benötigte DirectX zu implementieren. Dadurch ist es möglich fast alle Windowsspiele, die auf Steam erhältlich sind unter Linux zu nutzen. Und das funktioniert oftmals mit drei weiteren Klicks bei der Installation. Man muss lediglich einen Rechtsklick auf das zu installierende Spiel in der Library ausführen, Properties… > Compatibility wählen und dort das Häkchen bei „Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool“ setzen. Dort kann dann noch die gewünschte Protonversion gewählt werden. Dann lässt sich das Spiel wie jedes andere über den „Install“-Button installieren.

Ich vertraue der Software schon so sehr, dass ich vor dem Kauf eines Spieles nicht einmal mehr prüfe ob es unter Proton läuft. Unter protondb.com findet sich eine Datenbank, die neben dem Kompatibilitätsranking des Spiels oftmals auch Workarrounds für eventuelle Einschränkungen bereithält. Ich selbst habe Proton sowohl unter Fedora als auch unter Ubuntu genutzt und nie mit größeren Problemen mit der Software zu kämpfen gehabt. Von Freunden habe ich erfahren, dass es auch unter Arch und Gentoo reibungslos seinen Dienst tut.

Ich muss jedoch zugeben, dass es bis heute zwei Spiele gibt, die mich vor Herausforderungen stellten. Für das Spiel „Warhammer 40000 Spacemarine“ musste ich z.B. die .exe des Spiels gegen eine gecrackte Version austauschen. (Das war aufgrund von DRM-Restriktionen nötig)
„Elite Dangerous“ stellte mich vor so große Hürden, dass mir während des Installationsprozesses die Lust an diesem Spiel vollends vergangen ist.

Ich kann jedem raten Proton eine Chance zu geben und es einfach einmal auszuprobieren. Ich denke, dass es das Potential hat Linux auch in der Spielewelt einen Platz zukommen zu lassen.
